Case Study:  Valley Health – Multi-Disciplinary Telehealth Program

Valley Health has implemented a multidisciplinary telehealth program across service lines leveraging Avizia’s telemedicine carts and peripherals to connect patients with remote providers.

Background

Valley Health is a nonprofit organization serving the healthcare needs of people in and around an area known as the Top of Virginia, as well as parts of West Virginia and Maryland. Headquartered in Winchester, Virginia, Valley Health operates six hospitals. Combined, the Valley Health hospitals represent about 600 licensed inpatient beds and about 170 long-term care beds, managed by more than 5,300 employees and a medical staff of more than 500.

Challenge

Winchester Medical Center is the flagship hospital offering a wide range of diagnostic, surgical and specialty care services, including a Level II Trauma Center. The five spoke hospitals within the Valley Health network are located in a rural and mountainous region, making access to care extremely challenging. Specialists typically drive to each of the outlying areas to provide in-person care on a limited basis, but such practices are transforming with the integration of enterprise telehealth. One of the driving forces for the expansion of telehealth is the evolving landscape of healthcare, specifically the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) initiatives.
